About
The Cynisca database originated out of the convergence of two research projects that were being carried out at the same time at the ancient history department of Mannheim University: Melanie Meaker’s dissertation on women and ancient Greek sports and Christoph Begass’s Habilitation thesis on the agonothesia.
The database was conceived by Melanie Meaker and Alexander Meeus. For the most part, the sources were collected by Melanie Meaker; Christoph Begass added the agonothesia-inscriptions. Translations and commentaries were produced by Christoph Begass, Melanie Meaker, and Alexander Meeus.
For the technical realization of the database on the Mannheim University website, we are most grateful the Mannheim University Library staff at the Research Data Centre, the Open Science Office and the Digital Library Services, especially Christos Sidiropoulos, Larissa Will, Philipp Zumstein and Stefan Weil.
We would also like to thank Marie Beck, who assisted us with finding editions and translations in the public domain and with copy-editing. Suggestions for corrections or additions can be directed to cynisca.database [at] uni-mannheim [dot] de.
