Kotzebue geht es nicht darum, Napoleon zu preisen, sondern er stellt ihn als eine Person dar, die für ihren eigenen Ruhm Menschenleben opfert und anderen Leid zufügt. Im Unterschied zu anderen Zeitgenossen beschreibt Kotzebue die Toten der napoleonischen Kriege nicht als Märtyrer für Deutschland, sondern allein als Opfer einer selbstsüchtigen Großmachtpolitik.</text>
